Professor Willie McGuire
University of Glasgow

What drives me is a need to improve the learning experience for all-teachers and students- and the desire to support both equally in that enhancement process.

Nationally, I am a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy with whom I have collaborated on national projects such as the Future Leadership of Teaching Excellence programme in Higher Education (FLiTE). I am also a Senior Fellow of the Staff and Educational Development Association (SFSEDA) with whom I have recently been appointed as an Executive member and Trustee.

Internationally, I have a long-standing collaboration with the Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (LiHE) with whom I have published three books in relation to advancing teaching excellence in Higher Education. I also recently won the prestigious Vidya Ratna award for Research Excellence for my work on MOOCs in India and I have won several teaching excellence awards in my institution as well as numerous nominations for Student Teaching Awards.

I am currently Chief External Examiner for the University of Birmingham City for PGCE Secondary and the External Examiner for the University of Brighton’s PGCE and STD English. I also publish widely and take very seriously the need for knowledge exchange to support actual change in classroom contexts. Consequently, I have presented papers at many inter/national conferences on a variety of topics under the broad heading of SoLT. My recent interests have included: MOOC architectures, SPOCs, Hybridising Formative and Summative Assessment, ‘Modelled’ Feedback, The Moderation of Summative Assessments and most recently I have been working on internally generated feedback using comparison to activate the feedback. While these are my main interests, I have also found the time to co-author a book chapter on mentoring teachers:
