Wendy is a qualified teacher (QTLS) with fifteen years of experience across Further and Higher Education, where she has focused primarily on teaching students in preparation for Higher Education (HE) and leading courses in the humanities and social sciences. She is passionate regarding dismantling barriers to student access and achievement.
After leading Access and Pre-Access courses in Further Education (FE), Wendy joined the University of Sussex in 2015. At Sussex, she has convened interdisciplinary Foundation Year and anthropology undergraduate modules, delivered postgraduate teaching, and supervised students. She served as Director of Teaching and Learning for the School of Global Studies (2021-2024) and as Academic Co-chair of the Welcome, Induction and Transition (WIT) Oversight Group (2024-2025), which oversees the university’s whole-institution approach to welcome, induction, and transition activities.
Wendy’s part-time doctoral research, submitted in August 2024, examines the educational decision-making and course experiences of Foundation Year students. She co-hosts the monthly SEDA Transitions Community of Practice with Professor Wendy Garnham, following publication of the SEDA Special Issue on Transitions into, through and out of Higher Education. Wendy also contributes to sector discussions on creating inclusive and accessible learning environments that foster community and academic self-concept. Since 2018, Wendy has served as both a member of the Foundation Year Network’s Executive Committee and its Membership Secretary, developing strong connections with FY practitioners across the UK.
