Dr Chris Martin (SFHEA, FSEDA) is a Senior Learner Developer within the Education Development Service (EDS) at Birmingham City University (BCU). He currently oversees the open-access student-facing provision for academic writing and skills development, student life coaching, maths and statistics, and leading Transition-related projects across the university. In addition, Chris supports the PgCertHE by teaching topics on student motivation, engagement and wellbeing as well as mentoring and reviewing for the AdvanceHE-accredited Fellowship programme.
Chris has over 17 years of experience in both secondary and higher education, and his academic background is in applied linguistics and learner psychology. As a researcher and practitioner, Chris is interested in the role of research-informed practice and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. He has led on and supported several SoTL research projects at BCU exploring the applications of motivational psychology to learning, teaching and assessment contexts. His key areas of interest include the motivational potential of authentic assessment, self-determination and positive psychology in the classroom. He has recently completed his SEDA Fellowship, drawing on his experience in staff and learner development and he is a Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol) and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (AFBPsS).
Alongside membership of the Fellowship Committee, Chris is also a member of the SEDA Communities of Practice for Student Transition and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
