Background

Educational Developments is the magazine of the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA), the professional association for staff and educational developers in the UK, promoting innovation and good practice in higher education. It is published quarterly and is available electronically on the SEDA website.

Readership

Our “target” readers range from full-time educational developers in units, through people with educational development responsibilities as part of their portfolio, to those who are interested in matters such as learning, teaching, assessment, course design and the wider process of educational reform. SEDA has an international membership and readership. Our articles are discoverable via EBSCOhost.

Style

Educational Developments is a magazine, as opposed to an academic journal – articles can be written in the active voice or in a journalistic style, and we welcome illustrations.

Length

All contributions are reviewed for acceptance by the Editorial Board. Contributions normally fall into one of the following categories:

  • Articles or reports (3000 words maximum)
  • Brief reports on, for example, innovative practice, in response to previous pieces, conference events, etc (800 words)
  • Book reviews (500 words)

Submission of an article to Educational Developments implies that it has not been published elsewhere and that it is not currently being considered by any other publisher or editor.

Format

Articles should be typed, single spaced and have only one title. The title will appear in bold. We encourage the use of short subheadings (which will also appear in bold) to divide the article. We also encourage the use of boxes for lists, bullet points etc., diagrams and photographs.

Single quotation marks, not double, should be used throughout.

Anglicised spelling should be used where possible, e.g. ‘organisation’, not ‘organization’.

We welcome artwork (material that is not textual) such as tables, figures, diagrams, charts, graphs and illustrations. We will be guided by your original text in the laying out, but please submit your artwork as separate files as well.

Images which accompany articles should be submitted in JPEG or PDF formats, Images should be at least 300 dpi (dots per inch) in resolution when sized at 4 x 5 inches, and should not be embedded in Word documents.

Key words

Please add up to five key words at the beginning of your article.

Referencing

As Educational Developments is a magazine, the number of references should be limited to all but the most essential ones. If you quote references or sources, full details should be given using the Harvard system.

e.g.    Land, R. (2004) Educational Development: discourse, identity and practice, London: SRHE/OUP

In the text the author’s name, year of publication and page number should be quoted in brackets

e.g.    (Land, 2004: 25)

Long URLs should be given in TinyURL format (http://tinyurl.com).  Dates of access are not necessary.

Book reviews

You should assume no specialised knowledge, but write clear, straightforward accounts in plain English. It is helpful to describe the book’s content so that readers will gain an overview, and to indicate how and to whom it might be most useful. Don’t feel you have to restrict yourself to description – by all means argue with the author.

It would be good if you could suggest a short, witty and eye-catching headline for your review! Beneath the headline are the title, author’s name, publisher (date), price and ISBN number.

About you

Underneath the title of you piece we will use your name and your institution (if appropriate).

After the end of your piece, we will use

  • Your name
  • Your institutional affiliation (if any)
  • Your role
  • How readers can contact you: email, phone

Please include all these details when you submit your article.

Other information

The Educational Developments Editorial Committee reserve the right to make minor alterations during the editing process in order to adapt articles to the house style and length. Such alternations will not affect the main content of the article. A proof copy will not be supplied to authors prior to printing.

Institutional repositories

The “author accepted manuscript” is the version that has undergone peer review and has been accepted for publication. Authors are free to deposit a copy in their institutional repository but we would appreciate an acknowledgement that it was first published in Educational Developments with a link back to the SEDA Educational Developments site. The “version of record” is the final version that has been published and will have undergone copy editing and typesetting as part of an issue of Educational Developments.
